Life is an endless struggle full of frustrations and challenges, but eventually you find a hair stylist you like. ~Author Unknown

Hello Everyone,

So, you want to go short do you? You want me to cut it? Why me? Are you having a happy day? I will not cut your hair off if you are not happy, are you happy? You know it will change your whole persona right? You will need a new wardrobe and new make up. What will your mate say? Men like long hair, you know ? Ok, take a long breath and tell me to cut…..Yes, we have enough to donate to Locks of Love

Are you still breathing?

You look amazing! High Art is what I call this new look! Abstract and asymmetrical yet stimulating in the intricate detail without disturbing the form…. Thank God you like it, can’t put it back!

We have these conversations every day at the salon. Once a woman decides to change her look by going shorter, we try not to change her mind. Change is good, and yes it is also scary.

I believe that for as she thinks within herself, so she is.What a person thinks and feels will always reflect in words and in actions. It is a feeling of empowerment and control when we cut off more than an inch of hair….so if you feel it, just do it!

And remember its only hair it will grow back. Happy day everyone see you soon at the salon. Hair by Maria at Miracles Salon.

Hello Everyone,

It has been a month to remember and one that I will probably never forget. The salon has flooded. Again. The walls and floors have to be replaced. Again. This last flood has sent me over the edge, granted I was always close to the edge but this has officially sent me down a sloppy hill of despair. The answer to back pain, rage and lack of sleep?

Exercise. What? Me?

I would like to confess that I hate to work out, I truly do. I need to be shamed into it, and shamed I was. My total disregard for my health and well being led me to a fantastic trainer Hassan Ali and he instinctively suggested that I warm-up using a 70 lb punching bag. Too funny!

Tell me again people, how many more years of added life will I get for giving up sensory pleasure? Shame me into giving up sugar, fat, wine, chocolate etc.. Crowd me in a space with spandex wearing strangers, make me use machines with enough germs to kill a kindergarten teacher, let me listen to Yanni on the speaker one more time. I tried to work out….but I quit.

Hmmm, under construction at the salon…the same in life as Saramago, the novelist writes. As my little store is under construction, so am I. Please excuse the mess.

“Seest thou how God with his lightning smites always the bigger animals, and will not suffer them to wax insolent, while those of a lesser bulk chafe him not? How likewise his bolts fall ever on the highest houses and the tallest trees? So plainly does He love to bring down everything that exalts itself. Thus ofttimes a mighty host is discomfited by a few men, when God in his jealousy sends fear or storm from heaven, and they perish in a way unworthy of them. For God allows no one to have high thoughts but Himself. ”
Hello Everyone,

Every once in a while you meet someone that surprises and impresses you with a truly modest, unpretentious, and gentle manner. I met Nana when I featured the salon with wow.com and he was my Account Executive. In the midst of setting up all the featured Hair Packages, we started to chat about how we liked the same books like The Outliers and The Art Of War. The more we talked, the more I realized that Nana had the unmistakable gift of gumption and HUMILITY.

Humility is defined as someone who is modest, lacks pretense, and who does not believe that he is better than anyone else. Humility in the context of leadership is mentioned in the book Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap… and Others Don’t. Having read the book long ago, I recognized that Nana had the quality of a leader. He modestly directs ego away from himself and continually recognizes the contribution of others in his company. Even when creating superb results, he is never boastful always asking ” how are we doing” …the most dreaded question that any business can ask.

Do not confuse humility with meek or timid. Humility is all about maintaining our pride about who we are, about our achievements… but without arrogance . It is the antithesis of HUBRIS, that excessive, arrogant pride which often leads to the downfall of some corporate execs. It’s about a quiet confidence without the need to toot your own horn; and about being content to let others discover their talents. It’s a lack of arrogance, not a lack of aggressiveness in the pursuit of achievement.

Imagine my pleasure when Nana’s answer to what he most dislikes was : Hubris. I knew that I was right about that young man. Here, the handsome executive and tour-de-force stepped up to the challenge to answer a probing set of questions and reveal his true nature.

1. What is your idea of happiness?

My idea of happiness is living the life I’ve always dreamed about – being content
with success without being complacent.

2. Where would you like to live?

I’ve traveled a bit… here and there. I visited Slovenia in 2006 for about 2
weeks, and I would certainly like to visit for an extended period.

I don’t have a specific place I would like to live.

3. What are your favorite heroes of fiction?
King leonidas, Spiderman and Hulk. King Leonidas for his bold moves regardless of
his well being – willing to die for the cause. Spiderman because he’s conflicted.
How do you leverage your given powers for the greater good, while attending to your
needs as well ? Hulk for his obvious emotional instability and its consequences.

4. Who are your favorite heroes of action?

That would be the same as 3

5. Your favorite characters of real life?

I admire different things in different individuals. I believe in the end, I’m a
great combination of all the admirable qualities I emulate from the leaders in my
life. With that said, I’m not perfect, however, I continue to strive to be my
favorite character.

6. Your favorite musician ?

Muse

7. The quality you most admire in a man?

Enhanced persistence

8. The quality you most admire in a woman?

Great combination of brains, beauty and a nice body

9. What is your favorite virtue?

Trust

10. What is your proudest achievement?

Setting and achieving seemingly impossible goals

11. What is your favorite occupation?

Management Consultant

12. Who would you have liked to be?

Lawyer

13. What is your most marked characteristic?

Disarming smile.

14. What do you value in your friends?

Trust and dependability

15. What in your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes?

Setting goals too low

16. What would you like to be?

I would like to be all I can be – achieve my full potential through enhanced
persistence, great relationships and hard work

17. What is your favorite color/flower/bird/name?

Grey

18. Other than… WOW, what word or expression do you most overuse?

“fair enough”

19. What is it you most dislike?

Hubris

20. What do you dislike about your appearance?

I love everything about me.

21. How would you like to die?

Quietly

22. What is your motto?

Go for it, and if you fall, get up, dust yourself off and try again

ENDS THE INTERVIEW…

Nana, we wish you continued success!

I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but, did I tell you that the Washington Post Express did a story on our new product line? Have a great day everyone.

Hello Everyone,

You may have heard all the buzz lately from health-conscious beauty insiders about Sulfate-free and Paraben-free haircare. Sulfates and Parabens are ingredients used in personal care, cosmetic, beauty and hair care products that reliable research and studies have shown to have a negative impact on our health.

Here is what I know about these chemicals:

SULFATES:

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate or Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate is a chemical added to beauty products as a sudsing agent. This chemical has been known to cause dryness, scalp irritation, split-ends, and when absorbed into the skin via the liver, it mimic’s estrogen and thus causes a hormonal imbalance. Most shampoos contain this chemical and if you read the label, look for 1.4-Dioxane, a sulfate derivative, that is listed as a carcinogen by the EPA. Also check for SLS, SLES, ALS, as most times, manufacturers use abbreviations to confuse the consumer. Here is a link for more information on Sulfates. Wisconsin Dept of Health

PARABENS

Brazil Nut

Propylparaben, Ethylparaben, and Butylparaben are synthetic preservatives used in many beauty products. The safety of these products is not very documented, but, what little we know is that it causes allergic reactions, rashes and skin irritation. Parabens are suspected to also be endoctrine disruptors, meaning they mimic estrogen and throw your whole system off. Parabens have also been known to cause premature skin aging, hair loss and having a cumulative effect on the body. It means that the more we use them, the worse it gets. Scary stuff people.

We, in the hair industry are very thankful to a growing consumer awareness and eco-conscious population that have made us aware of WHAT we use on ourselves and our clients.

The time has come to be more selective about what you put ON your body, as much as what you put IN it.

That is why I have developed a hair care line for the HAIR-OBSESSED

I have worked hard to develop a serious line of hair products that are eco-friendly, sustainable and stylish. The Miracles Salon stylists were the first testers of each product. We have a fierce talent for cutting hair and it was only fair that the stylists were part of the creation and high-quality formulation of the products. After a decade of custom-blending styling potions that are sulfate and paraben free, infused with Buriti Oil, Maracuja, Brazil Nut and Black Cacao. Miracles By Olympia Haircare will soon be available online and in our store. Wish me luck and the best to all of you.

Hello Everyone,
As 2010 evaporates like morning dew, the reality hits that a new year has emerged. Are you tired of predictions yet? No? Good. I have been gazing into my crystal ball for signs of whats to come in 2011. The inside of my unreliable illuminated devise has given me some tantalizing hints and warnings of disasters yet to come. I make no guarantees nor apologies for the following.

ECONOMY & BUSINESS

Hate to be the pessimist here but it will get worse. Buckle up small business because 2011 will be the real deal. Expect less, not zero growth, but less.Very unpredictable (excuse the pun).

The house in the suburbs is doomed. With oil so expensive make sure you live near a metro. The only real estate that will hold its value will be within walking distance to the city.

The price of fresh fruits and vegetables will skyrocket. If you like vegetables….start preserving PICKLES or grow your own. I plan on foraging for morels in the spring with my new friend Todd.

Mobile and G4 will be a must have tool for businesses. If you can ever figure out that new app.

Shopping will be perceived as a dominant cultural activity as a result of using a cell phone to do your shopping. Oh boy!

Remember travel agents? Well, the untouchable, infallible, unstoppable American LAWYER will soon become a starving blogger like me. Sites like Cybersettle, that are so crazy cheap will make hiring an attorney obsolete.

The middle class is dead. Period. We will define our class and social stratus by going 3 generations back, as in my great -great -great- grandfather was a merchant from France that settled in Traverse City, Michigan.(mono-class anyone?)

POLITICS

There will be no” withdrawal “from Iraq. Prime Minister Maliki is not capable of maintaining security OR stability long enough to organize a going away party for our troops. Do our soldiers know how to tell a Shi”te from a Sunni? Have we taken the time to explain how useless this war is?

Karzai and Zardari will be “surged” out. These sock- poppets need to be ousted. The only down side will be that Gen. Pervez Musharraf might return and thus give the Pakistani Taliban a national platform. Good God.

Sinophobia will bring Pelosi and Gingrich together like white on rice. They will start to bash the Chinese for their economic expansionism and blame them for our shameless dissoluteness. The fact that they own our debt and have financed our post 9/11 shopping spree will not be mentioned. The same attributes that earn praise from us in western countries, will now be used to condemn the Chinese.

Total economic meltdown in Europe.Totally. Deflation, panic, bad investments and dirty governments will insure the downfall of the European economy. Have I said enough here? A debt crisis is a debt crisis for goodness sake. The only good thing about this, is that you can’t get much lower than… this. This will be hitting bottom.

LOVE- FOOD-LIFE

Cupcakes are out and pies are in. Real people make cherry pie. Pie is good! Chocolate and red wine always IN. Single malt scotch IN ,but, always neat, NOT in a cocktail.Grilling…IN.

Music, live music, will bring all age barriers together. Invite your grandpa to a live street music performance.

Your lack of individualism will vex your heart. Your internet virtual being will expose your blog/shopping/ viewing trends to the entire world. No more you.

When you will be asked to choose between Religion and God, most of us will choose God. Thank God for that one.Phew!

Monogomy will be hot. Marriage and commitment will be back in style with men playing a more traditional role once again. Online dating will decline and people will ask family and friends to introduce them to someone good and deserving. (mom knows best…I told you so).Commitment is the new black.

Love will be based on trust, friendship, adventure, respect, spontaneity and an exclusive relationship. No status update needed…..I wish you all a Great 2011.For hair and fashion predictions, please visit the Miracles Salon Blog

Please join in a discussion about the current situation on the ground in Haiti and the challenges facing the Haitian people in the near term. On January 12, 2010 Haiti was hit by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake devastating the fragile country’s infrastructure and killing 300,000 people, wounding 400,000 and leaving 2 million homeless. Despite an outpouring of donations and aid commitments from private citizens, foreign governments and multilateral institutions, there has been very little progress on recovery and reconstruction. Only 2% of the rubble has been cleared, people live in 1,370 camps under makeshift tents with no electricity, sanitation or potable water. They have limited access to healthcare and food. With elections scheduled for November 28, 2010, Haitians now have to worry about a deteriorating security environment as the ruling Party begins to put in place the foundation for an electoral coup. All proceeds benefit Doctors Without Borders.

Hello Everyone,

Thanksgiving is over, Christmas is almost here and New Years Eve is around the corner. Let’s face it, the holidays are for family, sure, but it’s really for couples. Everywhere you look, you see ads for the glittering stone, that if purchased for her, she will forever love you. The commercial for the Home Depot Gift Card, if purchased for him, he will also forever love you and possibly fix the sink that has been leaking for the past 3 months. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not upset that I am single, lets face it, we single girls make up for it in the Spring and Summer months…. if you know what I mean. I am sure that I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder, oh hell…. the wrong UNDIES affect my mood, for that matter.
As this is a giving season, I have decided to give you my (REDACTED) holiday list for single women.

BEWARE OF SEASONAL SELF-MEDICATING

Self medicating is highly detrimental to your well being. Period. Please be kind to your soul and don’t do it. Sure, nothing beats a nice glass of red wine or a shot of mongolian vodka at the end of the day, especially if all you did all day long is say Mazel Tov, Feliz Navidad, Hronia Polla and Ho, Ho ,Ho… to you too. Then again, it’s also detrimental to our well being being alone during the holidays, so what do I know?

I do know that I have no desire to be celibate until the perfect man comes along. I do know that I have a habit of ending things early, especially if it starts to enter relationship territory. I vividly recall the man that had a weird habit of holding on too tight while saying good night, like I was going to fly away. Then, there was the coked-up lawyer that itemized the dinner tab and said things like ( ” Want to help me upload my brief tonight?” HOT)

Lets not forget my favorite….ezysleezy1966 . Yup, that was his nickname , but he deserves a whole Magnum Opus and I need to start cooking dinner soon.

Those men were not my destiny but alas, do we single women need that much help?

LISTEN TO MUSIC

Yes, listen to music, live music, music is good for the lonely soul. I did laundry listening to Mary J Blige today, the woman rocks my soul. I like live music the best, and I am lucky to have a few venues very close by. Top of my list is Iota club & cafe, Galaxy-Hut and Ireland’s Four Courts . Plenty of music around , go listen and stop moping !

TREAT YOURSELF

Call the Spa at the Mandarin Oriental and book a rejuvenating facial. Skin gets dry and dehydrated in the Winter, and you really do not need to look so pasty and ashy? do you? Is that gray roots I see? You know where to go for that I’m sure Miracles Salon of course. I went to a movie last week, and then met a few friends at Poste at the Hotel Monaco . I’m not sure what was better, the food or the men in that place. My new favorite place to eat….Yeah, go to Poste, you deserve to.

HAVE HOPE

Lamenting the fact that we are alone for the holidays is so not cool. Put on your fake-happy-smile-face and take it like a champ. Just because we are not with handsome, attractive, sexy, wealthy, pie making, intelligent, guitar playing, baby lover,hunter/gatherer, is no reason to be depressed………Save that for the next few months ahead of us. No plus-one? No problem. Show up alone to that holiday dinner….You never know what life will throw your way. Have a fantastic holiday everyone!

All the girls had our nails and waxing done

Ordered a Sushi cake for Elias’ Birthday( don’t ask me what a shushi cake is)

Had lunch at Tacklebox in Georgetown

Picked up Voula’s wedding dress

YES, VOULA IS GETTING MARRIED…. TOMORROW

Little did I know this last summer when I asked my daughter to bring a LeBron James T-shirt for a cute Greek boy that I met at the local cafe. He was sitting across from me, dressed in a soldier’s uniform. I remember thinking that the girls in D.C. should see this stud-muffin that jumps from helicopters and trains local youths in Muay Thai. Niko , my soon to be son, is precious.

To make a short story …short, Niko never did get his T-shirt( they were out) he fell in love with my daughter instead. Life, once again , is full of surprises . From the moment they met, they have been inseparable. It is a win – win situation as far as I am concerned, Voula got her life mate and I have a strong lovely new son. I wish you all Love.
