The state of the country is in trouble. Everyone is concerned with their welfare, and the holidays are apprehensively approaching. We shouldn’t be concerned with being able to buy those cute Ugg boots, that Apple I-phone or a Playstation 3. We should all be thankful that there is still a roof over our heads to keep us warm and safe, as well as food on the table every night. As long as we still hold on to the necessities of food, shelter and health, that is all that matters.
Unfortunately, there are many people in our country that don’t have certain necessities needed in life. Even though we are all going through difficult times, we still need to be generous towards the homeless. We all may have problems, but there is always someone somewhere that is in a worse position than us.
Rosslyn is doing something to help our homeless. On Thursday, December 11th from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at the Top of the Town, there is the Third Annual A-SPAN Help-the-Homeless Holiday Gala. There will be a Live Auction with 107.3′s Chilli Amar, live music and hors d’oeuvres catered by Santa Fé Cafe. A-SPAN is a nonprofit community-based organization hosting the gala. Their mission is to assist every homeless person in Arlington County to get off the streets and live a life of dignity. A-SPAN works with and on behalf of homeless people to secure the support and services necessary for them to lead self-sufficient and healthy lives.
Tickets are limited, so visit www.A-SPAN.org to purchase!
This is the time we all need to ban together and help each other. With everyone banded together and supporting each other, we will make it through everything.
Miracles Salon had a party last night, and it was fantastic. Live music, great food and the most important ingredient for a party…a great bunch of people. I would say that the most beautiful people in Washington, D.C were all there. The mood was high and it made my spirit sing to see people happy. We don’t get to see too much merriment around this town that often. For a few hours we were all able to forget our personal problems, our differences, our heart-brakes (mine) and focus on how great life really is when outside factors(cable news media) shout doom and gloom.
Everyone there thought it was a holiday party, and it was, but i was quietly celebrating something else. After eight months of hard work, my website had gone live. www.miraclesinthecity.com was launched just two hours before the party. I felt so excited, so winded, so overwhelmed that I did not announce it at the party. All I could think about was this: job well done!
www.Miraclesinthecity.com is something beyond my expectations. I am impressed and very grateful. Blue Water Media did a fine job. Thank you Patricia Drake and Matt Hurley for “getting me”. Thank you my lovely daughters for helping my dream, even though you thought I was crazed. Thank you my staff for being patient and understanding when I told you I would be back in the store when the site was finished. Thank you my clients for if it wasn’t for you, none of this would have been possible.
Above all I thank God.
Now if you can excuse me, I am off to become a dot com mogul.
I’ve had another eventful week at the salon. More and more clients are losing their jobs. Older clients have lost half of their retirement funds, while the younger clients go to work in fear. It is becoming very hard to keep spirits high.
It gets better: I saw a couple of clients at the supermarket this morning. They hugged and kissed me and proceeded to explain that they are now cutting their own hair. YIKES!! Enough nonsense everybody.
I just recently I came back from a cruise to the Bahamas with my college roommate, Lindsay, for her birthday celebration. This mammoth boat docked on the sunny port of Nassau, Bahamas. Growing up, I had fond memories of the snorkeling, conch fritters and best of all, the straw market. I’m an enthusiast of local artisans and the crafts that they create, which is unique to each country you visit. Anyway, after a day of snorkeling I was ecstatic to go to the straw market and make my eclectic purchases of gifts to take back home. I didn’t know that my afternoon of retail therapy would soon go sour.Continue reading →
There is nothing better than being in a voting line with 600 people ahead of you at 6:20 am. It’s amazing what a great country we live in. Most of my neighbors were there and the sense of community was overwhelming. Continue reading →
As I rush out my front door every morning, it’s a challenge to spend hours in front of the bathroom mirror to be up to par with the women from decades past. OH, how nice to be in a silk robe, a fresh cup of hot coffee, and dozens of hot rollers in my hair while I carefully apply my make-up. The retro women of the 50’s and 60’s always left the house put together, and never, ever with wet hair. GHASTLY! Ladies, what is wrong with us?HISTORY is supposed to repeat itself, so, lets repeat what the women decades ago did: TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES!
Lets start with the obvious: HAIR. Here is what you need, don’t worry the list is short.
- Large hot rollers or a ceramic iron (1 inch if your hair is shoulder length or longer, smaller than and inch if your hair is shorter). Need a curling iron or hot rollers?Bobby pins
- Hair/finishing spray
- Comb/brush
Now, section out your hair and gently mist it with some spray. Take small sections at a time and curl them into ringlets (Shirley Temple or Goddess, whatever you prefer). Flip your hair over and gently separate or comb. Gently mist with spray again and that’s it!
Complete your look with some red lips, smoky eyes and a natural base makeup.
Need some extra inspiration, check out the women of Mad Men. Not only a great show, but a place for retro inspiration.
Election Day ’08: McCain or Obama, it doesn’t matter. Vote on election day and go to Starbucks for a treat. Everyone who votes gets a free cup of coffee. I just read about this promo on http://www.gotapex.com
